Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 in which he enjoyed playing numerous card games when he was young. He found himself becoming really aggressive in these particular card games while competing against his dad. After finishing high school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a little while and moved away to New York City to participate in some big-time chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were tough as he would play countless hours and fail to win a majority of the time. He made some additional cash by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He judged he could improve his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He made an effort to get more sleep and focus even more on poker.
The definite improvement in his skills began when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest gamblers would often challenge each other. Howard was able to access a number of the greatest players in chess. With their help, he would tweak his strategic thinking abilities. He used these strategy concepts in the game of NL texas hold’em.
He also assisted his sibling Annie Duke master poker. Annie was a superb student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about the right way to make the correct choice. He told Annie to move out to Sin City and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the greatest women players the poker world ever. He moved to Las Vegas in 1993 and played cash games for the following decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to play more tournaments.
